Umno should not ban its state and divisional leadership from cooperating with PAS for the upcoming general election, said PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.
He alleged that some Umno chapters wanted to work with PAS to unite the ummah, believing that the cooperation would open up more opportunities to win in the 15th general election (GE15).
Hashim (above) called on Umno to review its decision to not give autonomy to state and divisional leadership, especially in states they could potentially win in if two of the largest Malay-Muslim parties unite, adding that ego should not get in the way.
“We cannot stop Umno, it is up to them (to disallow autonomy on its state leadership).
“For me, Umno should not prevent its states or divisions from working together for the sake of unifying the ummah.
“... I hope Umno thinks about it. We have a chance to win especially in states like Selangor and others if we work together,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan said the party’s state and divisional leadership do not have the autonomy to cooperate with PAS and Bersatu for GE15.
He was reminding all Umno chapters, including Selangor which had sought autonomy to defeat Pakatan Harapan in the next polls, to stick to the party’s decision which was made during its annual general assembly in March.
He added that the decision was final.
Utilising Muafakat pact
It was reported that Selangor Umno wished to work with PAS under the Muafakat Nasional pact.
Selangor BN chief Noh Omar reportedly said that cooperation between Umno and the Islamist party is considered good and more effective.
In May, Noh said Umno and PAS would avoid contesting the same seats in Selangor, with the hope of ousting Harapan.
With the strategy, Umno and PAS were targeting to win at least 30 of the 56 state seats up for grabs in Selangor, he added.
Several states including Penang had also expressed wanting to continue cooperating with Bersatu and PAS.
After the last general election, Umno and PAS signed the Muafakat charter to collaborate on issues affecting Malays and Muslims.
While the cooperation was initially smooth sailing, cracks emerged after PAS decided to join the Bersatu-led coalition, Perikatan Nasional.
The Umno-PAS pact hit rock bottom after both parties clashed in the Malacca and Johor state elections.
Hashim said that PAS continued to defend the Muafakat charter for the sake of the ummah, and it was up to Umno whether it wanted to continue working together. - Mkini
