KUALA LUMPUR: A public health expert, an archaeologist, a teacher, a historian, and two organisations have been named recipients of the Merdeka Award this year.

They are: Professor Dr Adeeba Kamarulzaman, Professor Emeritus Siti Zuraina Abdul Majid, Samuel Isaiah, and Annabel Teh Gallop. The two organisations are Teach For Malaysia, and the Global Environment Centre.

Adeeba’s award in the health, science and technology category is for her contribution and commitment in leading the mitigation of infectious diseases as well as structuring the policies and responses to HIV/AIDS in Malaysia.

Siti Zuraina won the award in the outstanding scholastic achievement category for her contribution and role in the discovery of the ‘Perak man’, besides her efforts in promoting the designation of Lenggong Valley as a Unesco World Heritage site.

Samuel, programme director of Pemimpin GSL, won the inaugural award in a new category, Anugerah Harapan Merdeka, introduced this year. It is in recognition of his outstanding contribution and commitment in improving and uplifting education standards among Orang Asli children as well as in coaching teachers.

The Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Shah, patron and chairman of the Merdeka Award Trust, presented the awards to the six recipients.

In his speech, Sultan Nazrin said the trust wanted to nurture among young Malaysians the pioneering spirit that has helped drive Malaysia’s progress.

Each recipient was conferred a Merdeka Award trophy, certificate of recognition and cash rewards. The Anugerah Harapan Merdeka recipient received a certificate of recognition and cash reward. - FMT
