Senior minister: Promise kept to bring call for LCS RCI to cabinet

Hishammuddin Hussein said today he fulfilled his promise to bring the suggestion of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the littoral combat ship (LCS) issue to the cabinet.

At the same time, the senior minister (Security Cluster) told reporters that more discussions and time are needed for a decision to be made.

“It is still in the process involving all parties, particularly ministers.

“Of course, I can't reveal what was discussed in the cabinet meeting but it must be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” he said.

“Like what I promised in the Senate yesterday, I would bring the matter to the cabinet, and I have done that,” added Hishammuddin, who is also the defence minister.

Quizzed on an expected timeframe for the cabinet to decide, he noted that the Agong is currently abroad and there are further matters that could be discussed at another cabinet meeting.

“What has been discussed could require further discussions,” he said, adding that the final decision lies in the hands of the Agong.

Various parties including the government and opposition had separately appealed to the Agong for an RCI into the LCS scandal concerning a delay in the completion of six vessels for the Royal Malaysian Navy.

The LCS project came under public scrutiny after the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee released its report.

In it, numerous issues were highlighted, including the government having paid RM6.083 billion since 2013 with no ship having been delivered.

The first ship was supposed to arrive in 2019. - Mkini
