Azalina's priority - address outdated laws, bring them up to speed

Azalina Othman Said’s foremost focus in her new position as Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Law and Institutional Reform would be to address outdated laws and make necessary amendments for laws to be relevant to current times.

One such example, Azalina (above) said, would be separating the powers of the attorney-general and the public prosecutor in order to preserve the independence of the latter.

“I will also ensure that outstanding issues, including the citizenship status of children born overseas to Malaysian mothers, will see continued progress and where need be, laws will be reformed to reinstate rights to the vulnerable, marginalised, and those who are not treated equally in our nation,” she said in a statement today.

This new government will face many challenges ahead, what with the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic downturn predicted in 2023, she said.

“Nevertheless, I look forward to working alongside elected representatives from various parties to address the challenges that lie ahead,” she said.

Azalina thanked Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for her appointment to the “historical unity government” cabinet.

She also expressed her respect for Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his “bravery and courage” in daring to rise above party politics and extend a hand across the aisle for the sake of nation-building.

Zahid is also part of the new cabinet, as the deputy prime minister and the rural and regional development minister.

Lastly, she thanked the voters of Pengerang for electing her.

Anwar yesterday announced his new cabinet list consisting of 28 ministers. The ministers were sworn in earlier today. - Mkini
