PETALING JAYA: A DAP elected representative has paid tribute to PAS’ volunteer corp, Unit Amal, for helping in the search for victims in the Batang Kali landslide tragedy yesterday.
Skudai assemblyman Marina Ibrahim said the PAS unit was renowned for their work ethic. She also recounted their involvement in some of the first few Bersih rallies in the past when the Islamic party was part of the then Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
“Everyone knows I don’t like PAS. I’m not discreet about that. But when it comes to Unit Amal, I really respect them,” she said in a Twitter post.
She was commenting on a Twitter post by @fairuz_azmi83, who shared a picture of Unit Amal members assisting in the search and rescue operation in Batang Kali.
Marina also advised Pakatan Harapan (PH) supporters not to judge the Unit Amal volunteers nor accuse them of merely putting on a show in helping out in the rescue efforts.
“If your own leaders do the same thing you’d have to find ideas to ‘twist’ it another way,” she said. “Let’s just celebrate whatever is good.”
Unit Amal, also known as Jabatan Amal Malaysia, is one of the units under PAS’ youth wing and functions as a uniformed welfare voluntary organisation.
It was founded in 1991 and is notable for its work in helping victims of natural disasters and also for forming human shields and guiding the crowds during the Bersih rally in downtown Kuala Lumpur. - FMT
