Fate of four Sabah Bersatu MPs will be determined by anti-hopping law

Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said the fate of the four Sabah MPs who left the party yesterday will be determined by the anti-hopping law which came into force on Oct 5.

He said Sabah Bersatu continues to exist and function despite its former chairperson Hajiji Noor and his followers having announced quitting the party.

"The position of four MPs who contested under the GRS logo in the recently concluded general election (GE15) will be determined based on the anti-party hopping law under Article 49A of the Federal Constitution," Muhyiddin (above) said in a statement today.

"The state liaison, divisions and branches in Sabah were established by the Bersatu supreme council, therefore only the supreme council has the authority to determine their status as enshrined under the party constitution.”

Muhyiddin, who is the Perikatan Nasional chairperson, expressed his disappointment with the former state leadership which failed to show loyalty to the party.

He also announced the appointment of Beluran MP Ronald Kiandee as the new Sabah Bersatu chairperson.

"I believe that Bersatu members in Sabah who are loyal to the party's struggle will stay in Bersatu," Muhyiddin said.

It was reported yesterday that Sabah Bersatu virtually collapsed after Hajiji announced that its members had quit, with a plan to form another party.

They include four parliamentarians and 15 state assemblypersons.

Sabah Bersatu has five MPs - four of them contested under the GRS banner during GE15.

Hajiji’s camp not joining PGRS

The anti-hopping law does not cover the 15 state assemblypersons as the state legislative assembly has yet to enact such laws.

Ronald is the odd man out for Sabah Bersatu - as he contested and won his Beluran seat on a PN ticket.

In the interim, Hajiji said they will be members of the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition instead.

Meanwhile, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) denied speculation that Hajiji's camp would be joining their party.

Party president Stephen Jimbagan said there was a misunderstanding, and that PGRS was instead applying to join the GRS coalition. - Mkini
