Gmail down, 77% of users believed to be affected

 

Gmail, or Google Mail, is the email service provided by Google and has an estimated 1.7 billion users.

PETALING JAYA: Gmail, the email service of Google, appeared to have gone down for at least two hours tonight, affecting many users across the world.

According to Downdetector, a site that monitors online status, more than 1,500 people registered an issue as at 10.45pm. Emails to and from FMT were also affected.

So far there has been no announcement from Google about the status of Gmail on their official Twitter page. However, the service appeared to be back online at 11.30pm.

The Sun newspaper in the UK said Gmail was down for hundreds of thousands of users and reported their complaints.

One wrote on Twitter: “Gmail is down, you’re not going mad” while another said: “Gmail is down. You can see your account but emails aren’t received.” A third added: “Looks like Gmail is down worldwide. I’m not receiving any emails now either. Reading many reports on Twitter.”

The Downdetector website reported that 77% of users were experiencing email problems and that over 1.5 billion users were complaining of undelivered emails and an unresponsive Gmail app.

The Free Press Journal newspaper in India also quoted users as complaining they could not receive any emails.

Twitter has been flooded with complaints on the matter. Among them was @vajraTheAstra who said “Is Gmail down for everyone or is there something wrong with my accounts? I am not receiving any mail” while @Dr_Spaghetti_Jr said “Looks like Gmail is down worldwide. Reading many reports on Twitter.” -FMT
