Mom of two proves her mettle as trailer driver

MASAI: Siti Hajar Mat Kasa, 36, who has been sharing videos of her driving heavy vehicle, has garnered attention among TikTok users.

The mother-of-two boys from Kampung Cahaya Baru said she started working as a trailer driver delivering goods to fulfil her dream to buy a house.

"I always saw women sharing videos of them driving trailer on TikTok before I become one. At that time, I told myself, if they can do it, I also can make it.

"At first, I followed my friend to learn how to drive a trailer during the Movement Control Order period," she told Harian Metro yesterday.

Siti, who obtained her Class E driving licence in February said she was selling desserts before becoming a trailer driver.

"Besides from passion and the eagerness to challenge myself, I started this career because I want to buy a house.

"I was selling desserts for five years and I changed my job because I need one that has payslip in order for me to buy a house.

"This has really pushed me to start this career," she said.

Siti said she has been delivering goods, including foods and logs, around the peninsula except Terengganu for the past six months.

"This is the third trailer that I am handling. Previously, I was sending containers from the port to Johor or from the south to the north.

"It has been challenging even though others may think that we are just working casually… we need to travel for more than 200km per day, nap along the roads or rest at R&R (highway rest areas) and sometimes may not even have time to eat.

"It was hard at first, but after grasping the driving skills, there's no more problem for me."

Touching on her most memorable moment, she said it was the time when she was learning how to make U-turn.

"Other than that, some were surprised when they learned that it was a woman who delivered the items, some got a shock because I wear baju kurung when behind the wheel.

"My parents had also tried to stop me from driving trailer, asking me to get another job, but now they are happy for me. This is my effort to sustain myself."

She also shared that it is never her intention to get attention by sharing her videos on TikTok.

"It is for myself, I want to record my life, and that women driving a trailer is nothing new." - NST
