No repeat of Sheraton Move, says Wan Fayhsal on PN in opposition

Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has stressed that there will not be a repeat of the Sheraton Move - which led to the collapse of the previous Pakatan Harapan government in 2020.

In a radio interview today, Wan Fayhsal (above) said the Perikatan Nasional coalition made a commitment to the electorate that it will be a responsible and dignified opposition.

“No, no, no, I think this (a repeat of the Sheraton Move) is something we must dispel. The commitment we’ve made to the public and the electorate that we are going to be a responsible and dignified opposition, I’m very much gearing up to be a good opposition member,” he said, adding that he would be one of the youngest MPs.

“Some of my experience as part of the government I shall use wisely to keep check and balance on the government we have today. We have a mixture of new and experienced MPs.

“It shall be interesting. We do have some experience governing,” he added.

Wan Fayshal also labelled the PN coalition as a “government-in-waiting” when asked on the coalition’s future role, adding that he is confident that PN will reclaim power in the 16th general election.

He added that Hamzah Zainudin’s appointment as opposition leader should “speak volumes” in response to questions on how PN will sway voters’ support.

“We want someone who has some sort of gravitas and deep experience in (the) government,” he said when asked why Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was not named for the role.

“(Muhyiddin) had that, of course. He is the most (experienced) of all, but Hamzah is an enigma by himself,” added the Bersatu man.

On whether Bersatu will see Hamzah as its future leader, Wan Fayhsal commented that Hamzah was “up there” in terms of seniority.

When asked to clarify Muhyiddin’s role as prime minister candidate, he said that the party shall wait for party elections.

“We shall wait for the series of party elections but as of now, he is our leader and PM candidate,” he said.

On Dec 10, PN named the Larut MP as its opposition leader, instead of former prime minister Muhyiddin.

The coalition’s leadership reportedly decided that Muhyiddin should act as the parliamentary leader for PN with PAS' Abdul Hadi Awang as his deputy. - Mkini
