Perikatan Nasional has named Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad as the party’s speaker candidate for Dewan Rakyat, ahead of the election for the post due on Dec 19.
This was revealed by Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal in a radio interview with BFM radio earlier today.
"We’ve named Radzi (as our speaker candidate),” said Wan Fayhsal, who is also the Bersatu Youth chief.
Previously a footballer for Perlis, Radzi (above) had served as a Kangar MP winning the 1982, 1986, 2004 and 2008 elections.
Radzi, who is a Bersatu member, was also elected as Langkawi MP following a win in the 1995 election and is currently a senator in the Dewan Negara.
Not concerned about the vote of confidence faced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the same day, Wan Fayhsal quipped that he was “more interested in seeing how the voting for the speaker will turn out”.
Parliament will reconvene on Dec 19 for a vote of confidence for the prime minister, as well as the naming of a Dewan Rakyat speaker.
An election will be held, given that more than one individual has been nominated for the post.
Pakatan Harapan is expected to nominate DAP's Lanang parliamentarian Alice Lau, who is also a DAP central committee member, as its Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker candidate, while PN previously remained coy on their chosen candidate.
It was previously reported that the 15th Parliament will commence with the meeting of the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 19 and 20.
Last week, former Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul has confirmed that his name is among the candidates proposed as the Dewan Rakyat speaker.
Speculation has been rife that Johari will be the new Dewan Rakyat speaker after Azhar Azizan Harun steps down from the position on Dec 18 in accordance with the Federal Constitution.
Johari was offered the speaker post in 2018 when Harapan came into power after GE14, but he turned it down. - Mkini
