The government under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim needs to look into replacing politicians who hold positions in national sports organisations, said PKR deputy youth leader Kamil Munim.
Kamil (above) said these positions should be held by qualified and experienced individuals to ensure the industry’s development.
“I expect the new government to look into replacing politicians (holding these positions) with those who have sufficient experience in a certain sport.
“Politicians who continue to dominate the industry need to be replaced with those who are more qualified, such as former athletes and any individuals with expertise in a certain sport,” Kamil said.
He cited the example of Arau MP Shahidan Kassim as the president of the Malaysian Athletics Federation who, according to Kamil, did not bring any significant reforms in the sporting arena of the country.
"Which part of Shahidan's track record qualifies him to lead the athletics union or the Malaysia Swimming Federation?” he questioned.
"It is the joint duty and responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure good governance at every level so that the sports industry in this country can continue to improve and produce more qualified and international athletes.
"The effort to develop the sports industry is a joint effort. So, let's work together towards uplifting the sports industry in the country.”
Systemic issue
Commenting on Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim's statement who claimed that sports organisations in this country are plagued by corruption, Kamil said Adam Adli was merely repeating the prime minister's previous stance and statement.
"The issue of corruption in this country is a systemic one. Such public statements should be responded to by all parties with a positive tone.
"Even the MACC a few months ago clearly stated that there are corrupt activities in the national sports industry.
"We will not be able to solve the problem if we continue to be in denial," Kamil said.
On Monday, Adam Adli said corruption within sports bodies must be curtailed for Malaysian athletes to realise their full potential.
Adam Adli, however, did not elaborate on his claims, which have since received flak from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) and Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president Mohamad Norza Zakaria.
He urged the Hang Tuah Jaya MP to show evidence that sports bodies are plagued by corruption.
Similarly, Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Hamidin Mohd Amin and Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) president Chong Kim Fatt said it would be good if Adam Adli engaged with the stakeholders before jumping to conclusions. - Mkini
