Sarawak DAP MPs fine with no govt posts, will play role of backbenchers

Chong Chieng Jen said Sarawak DAP MPs will take on the role of providing checks and balances in Parliament.

PETALING JAYA: Sarawak DAP, which has five MPs, says it is not disappointed that none of them were given government posts at the federal level, insisting that these are not on the party’s main agenda.

State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the MPs had given an assurance that they will play the role of backbenchers in the unity government led by Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Dewan Rakyat.

Yesterday, the Stampin MP revealed that “certain parties” had requested the chapter’s exclusion from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.

He said the prime minister had relayed this information to him on Friday, prior to the live telecast announcing deputy ministers in the government.

Chong insisted that the posts of ministers and deputy ministers from the party were not its main agenda, whether it was at the federal or state level.

“The main thing right now is that DAP and PH are the main bloc at the federal level.

“We (Sarawak DAP) will take on the role of providing checks and balances in Parliament as well as ensuring that the principles of transparency and good governance are implemented by the ministries and government agencies,” Bernama reported him as saying after the state DAP committee meeting in Kuching today.

He said the party’s principle was to develop the country and ensure a more trustworthy government, adding that the country’s main focus should be on the current economic challenges and political stability.

DAP has four ministers and six deputy ministers in the unity government under the leadership of Anwar, but none of them are from Sarawak.

The four are DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook (transport); Nga Kor Ming (local government development); Hannah Yeoh (youth and sports); and V Sivakumar (human resources).

The six DAP deputy ministers are Steven Sim (finance); Ramkarpal Singh (law and institutional reform); Chang Foong Hin (agriculture and food security); Liew Chin Tong (international trade and industry); Teo Nie Ching (communications and digital); and Lim Hui Ying (education). - FMT
