Sarawak author wins Waterstones Children’s Book Prize

Sarawakian author Nadia Mikail’s debut novel ‘The Cats We Meet Along The Way’ won the Waterstones children’s book prize which comes with 5,000-pound prize money.

The awards are decided on votes by Waterstones’ booksellers.

Nadia (above), 26, also won the older readers category.

‘The Cats We Meet Along the Way’ was inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic and Nadia being so far away from her own family.

The story revolves around 17-year-old Aisha who hasn't seen her sister June for two years.

With a calamity about to end the world in nine months' time, she and her mother decide that it's time to track June down and mend old wounds.

Along with Aisha's boyfriend and his parents as well as a stray cat called Fleabag, they set off on a road trip through Malaysia in a campervan.

And adventures ensue.

This young author is currently studying law in London. - Mkini
