Former international trade and industry minister Azmin Ali has accused the current administration of lying about Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) decision to invest in Malaysia.
This comes after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said that AWS had chosen to make its RM25.5 billion investments in Malaysia due to political stability and good policies by the current administration.
“When I met with AWS, they had never asked when Madani (government) will be formed. Yet these political hypocrites are willing to lie,” Azmin (above) said during a PN ceramah last night.
Azmin claimed that the present administration was attempting to take credit for the fruits of his labour.
He claimed that AWS’ investment was already approved by the National Committee on Investment (NCI) in July 2022 - for the first 10 years.
“I would like to inform you that I was directed by (former prime minister) Muhyiddin Yassin to go to San Francisco in May 2022.
“I had met with AWS and had long discussions, they had agreed to invest in Malaysia by a huge sum.
“The NCI approved AWS’ investment in July 2022 for the first 10 years and later in October 2022, for another five years resulting in the RM25.5 billion,” he said.
The former Gombak MP said that was due to the success of the previous PN government - led by Muhyiddin.
On March 2, AWS announced that it would be launching a new infrastructure region in Malaysia as part of a public-private partnership with the Malaysian government.
AWS has confirmed that it intended to invest at least RM25.5 billion in the country by 2037.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim told Dewan Rakyat on March 7 that negotiations with AWS started in December 2019, however, the corporate giant had taken a wait-and-see approach before investing.
He said that AWS had waited for political stability in the country with clear policies and direction, adding that transparency in the negotiation process was also a factor.
“In the end, they contacted us to state that it was because of political stability and clear policies that Amazon chose Malaysia to set up their base here,” Anwar was quoted as saying. - Mkini
