PETALING JAYA: Bersatu treasurer-general Salleh Bajuri was released yesterday after he was arrested and remanded for two days by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Malay news portal Sinar Daily said this was confirmed by the party’s information chief, Razali Idris.

“I was informed that Salleh was released on MACC bail and returned home yesterday evening,” he said.

Razali said Salleh’s arrest was an attempt to tarnish Bersatu’s image.

“I was told that no funds were channelled to his personal account.

“He is only responsible for looking after the party’s account, which is audited yearly, meaning the account is clean and there are no suspicious transactions.

“Looking at how we have been treated, I expect more Bersatu leaders to be arrested and investigated by MACC,” he said.

Salleh was arrested on March 2 and remanded for two days by the anti-graft agency.

According to sources, Salleh’s arrest involved investigations into the Jana Wibawa programme and the Akar Umbi Pemacu Negara (AkuPN) online application.

Earlier today, Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said Salleh’s arrest and remand was a form of unwarranted pressure on the party’s leaders and a “fishing expedition” to find fault.

The Muhyiddin Yassin-led party’s accounts were frozen by MACC a month ago under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (Amla).

This was believed to be in connection with an investigation into the alleged misappropriation of billions of ringgit meant for Covid-19 stimulus packages.

Last month, Bersatu’s Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan was charged with accepting a RM6.9 million bribe and soliciting an unspecified amount over a RM232 million road project linked to the Jana Wibawa programme.

Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad has also been slapped with five charges of soliciting and accepting bribes over projects involving Jana Wibawa. - FMT
