KUALA LUMPUR: Cheaper insurance coverage through the Rahmah scheme is being considered, says Salahuddin Ayub, the minister for domestic trade and cost of living.

He said the idea has received positive response from Etiqa Insurance, and ministry officers have been asked to discuss the matter with the company “whether it’s vehicle insurance, housing, real estate and the like”.

Salahuddin said he was confident that more companies would participate in the programme based on the “domino effect” that took place after the Menu Rahmah scheme was introduced to provide set meals at RM5.

The next initiative was the Rahmah Sales campaign for Hari Raya Aidilfitri, to be launched at a textile shop on Wednesday.

He said there was encouraging response from textile shops such as Mydin, which offers clothing for as little as RM30 while Jakel offers discounts of up to 50%.

“This is all good news for the people ahead of Raya celebrations and I was told that several hypermarkets will also continue to sell the price of basic goods with the Rahmah Sales,” he said after attending a Kenduri Menu Rahmah banquet organised by the ministry at Parliament House.

The government is also encouraging more manufacturing companies to join the Rahmah Sales initiative, said deputy minister Fuziah Salleh.

“We have queries from the industry players (regarding this Jualan Rahmah), but when it comes to the food industry, they have their own price structure. This price structure will have an effect on supermarkets and manufacturers need to solve the problem of the price structure first,” she said. - FMT
