PETALING JAYA: Bogus monks from Thailand have been earning RM500 daily in just four to five hours in Penang, police said today after breaking an alms-begging syndicate.
Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief Tan Cheng San said the syndicate was run by fake monks from Thailand.
He said the actions of the syndicate had jeopardised the efforts of genuine monks in obtaining donations.
Five foreigners, including a senior citizen, were arrested after raids on two public markets here, Bernama reported.
Tan said the raids came after public information and intelligence.
In a raid on the Bukit Mertajam public market at 9.30am, Thai men and two women were arrested. “Police seized eight bowls and RM40 in cash from the fake monks, who were collecting alms.”
The second raid was at 7.15am on Friday at the Taman Chai Leng public market, Perai, where police arrested another man carrying out similar activities. He had RM158 in cash on him.
“Preliminary investigations found all the suspects, aged between 41 and 64, entered the country through the Bukit Kayu Hitam entry point in Kedah between February and early this month.
“The suspects have been here several times to carry out similar activities,” he said at a press conference here today. - FMT
