PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said he was prepared to work with any changes in leadership positions as a result of the party elections.
“We will witness either a new leadership or the retention of the old line-up during the party elections,” he said at a party event in Johor Bahru, according to Bernama.
“I, as Umno president, will accept anyone. Together with the new leadership, I hope that we will strive and work together to strengthen the party.”
Umno members are voting for all positions except those of president and deputy president.
Zahid urged all candidates to close ranks and to forget all feuds, no matter who is chosen.
He added that it was vital for all members and candidates to be on the same team, not only to defend against external attacks but also to face the coming state elections in six states.
Zahid was in Johor Bahru to introduce the candidates for the vice-presidency and Supreme Council.
Asked whether the vote at Youth and Wanita’s wings, that seemed to show party members wanting more fresh faces, would also be seen in the contests for supreme council and vice-presidencies, Zahid said that it might be a different situation altogether.
“We hope that whoever is elected will rejuvenate Umno to face all coming challenges. What’s important is that we can work together as a team,” he added.
On new Umno Youth chief Akmal Saleh’s commitment to limiting the age of Umno Youth candidates to 40, Zahid said he had a similar view when holding the post.
Zahid said that the party was open and ready to accept any positive suggestion, including an amendment to cap the age limit for the Umno Youth chief.
Umno has yet to place an age limit for the national-level Umno Youth position. - FMT
