Egg saga: No need for inquiry into Wee's claims - speaker

Dewan Rakyat speaker Johari Abdul dismissed the need to hold an inquiry into claims by Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong that he was allegedly pressured to correct his remarks over the issue of imported eggs from India.

His response came following demands by Johari Abdul Ghani (BN-Titiwangsa) for the speaker to investigate Wee’s allegations.

The speaker once again pointed to the Federal Constitution, saying that MPs enjoy legal immunity under Article 63 when speaking in the august house or to any of its committees.

“There is no law that can be imposed on an MP who speaks inside Parliament.

“If he speaks outside of Parliament, that would be a different story.

“There is no need to launch an inquiry. Look at the Federal Constitution, it is very clear (on this matter),” Johari (above) told reporters in the Parliament today.

Yesterday, Wee told the Dewan Rakyat that Deepak Jaikishan, who claimed to represent J&E Advanced Tech Sdn Bhd, had name-dropped the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a phone call and proceeded to ask him to produce a statement over the matter.

J&E is the sole company that Putrajaya had allowed to import eggs from India during a local supply shortage.

Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Deepak denied contacting Wee and links to J&E.

The PMO had also issued a stern warning to those who misuse its name for their personal agenda, warning that action would be taken.

However, in a press conference today, Wee maintained it was “Deepak Jaikishan” who rang him twice – and called on the former carpet dealer to lodge a police report if someone had impersonated him.

On Feb 22, Wee told the Dewan Rakyat that the government should resolve problems faced by local egg producers and not import eggs from India - which he said were more expensive and smaller.

Putrajaya turned to the importing of eggs from India as a temporary measure to address local shortages.

Bersatu leader Azmin Ali had alleged that Deepak was the sole person awarded the contract to import eggs from India.

In response to Azmin’s claims, Deepak told Malaysiakini that his team was in the process of filing a defamation suit against him. - Mkini
