PARLIAMENT | Those who aspire to be astronauts and blast off to the moon don’t have to look at the heavens anymore and go to Sabah for the experience.
This sarcastic jibe was made by Wilfred Madius Tangau (Pakatan Harapan-Tuaran) in the Dewan Rakyat today when he bemoaned the poor road conditions in the Land Below the Wind.
While venting about the constant congestion on the state’s roads, Wilfred likened its potholes to craters on the surface of the moon.
“Sabah’s holey roads have caused many cases of flat tyres, cracked sports rims. And there was once, on Jalan Tuaran, over five vehicles were stranded by the roadside because of the same reason.
“If there’s anyone who wants to be an astronaut, everything is now easier. All you have to do is take a drive in Sabah.
“It’s the same experience as there are potholes at the front, back, left, and right,” he said when debating the Supply Bill 2023 at the committee level in the august House today.
He directed a question to the Works Ministry, seeking a response on measures taken to ensure that the roads last longer and have a higher resistance.
Meanwhile, the Upko president also expressed dissatisfaction over the Pan Borneo Highway as its construction has caused floods and damage to properties.
He asked the same ministry if an environmental impact assessment (EIA) was ever conducted for the construction of the toll-free highway.
“Sabahans are upset with the highway so far as there are so many side effects.
“Was it just one EIA for the entire 2,239km stretch? Was the report broken down according to the different packages?
“If yes, how many EIAs were done?” he asked.
He also pressed the ministry on the progress of the project and whether it is proceeding according to plan.
In the re-tabling of Budget 2023 last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the government will expedite the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway as well as the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road. - Mkini
