The Gerakan Mahasiswa Maju (GMM) has urged Universiti Putra Malaysia's (UPM) student council election committee (JPMPP) to rescind campaign rules on election materials.
In a statement today, GMM said they were informed of new rules on March 12 that all candidates must subject their campaign material for the committee's approval.
"Only with the approval of the JPMPP can they be posted and published on social media.
"In addition, the rules also prohibit any candidate or political party from criticising any party, especially UPM, in any way," said GMM.
GMM said the rules went against the spirit of campus democracy because campus elections allowed student representatives to provide checks and balances on campus policies.
"The election committee JPMPP has chosen to stifle the democratic spirit and suppress students' voices without hesitation.
"GMM condemns the committee for limiting students' freedom of speech and curtailing their freedom of expression and campaigning," said GMM.
