Explain alleged ROS letter to Umno, home minister urged

PARLIAMENT | PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hasan has urged Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to explain the contradictions between his decision to exempt Umno from a law that could see the party getting deregistered and an alleged  Registrar of Societies letter to the party on the matter.

While debating Budget 2023, Takiyuddin said he sighted the alleged letter from ROS to Umno that stated it had found irregularities in an additional motion passed during the party's general assembly last year which approved for the Umno president and deputy president’s posts not to be contested this time around.

"I don't know whether this letter is genuine or otherwise, but it contradicts the minister's statement that decided to invoke an exemption to Umno from complying with Section 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act, over the additional motion.

"This is a matter of public interest," said the Kota Baru MP.

Takiyuddin (above) urged Saifuddin to clarify the considerations made by ROS and his own decision to exempt Umno.

"If this (exemption) is being practised, can it be followed by other associations or will this matter be taken as a precedent?" he said.

Allegations of irregularities

Earlier today, Saifuddin said he had invoked Section 70 of the Societies Act to exempt Umno from getting deregistered.

The section reads: “The minister at his discretion in writing exempt any society registered under this Act from all or any of the provisions of this Act.”

With that, the minister had exempted Umno from complying with Section 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act, which relates to the deregistration of a society.

In response, Kuala Nerus Umno member Aizat Fikri Nasir Fikri, who filed a notice of objection with the ROS in January, said the Home Ministry’s decision further confirmed allegations of irregularities in the Umno elections. - Mkini
