Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail’s confirmation that the motion passed at the Umno general assembly to leave the president and deputy president’s posts uncontested proves it did not violate the party’s constitution.
In stating this, Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan (above) also said that this was not the first time that the top positions in the party were uncontested during the party’s elections.
"Thank you for this statement. I have already explained that there is no violation of Umno’s constitution or its rules regarding the general assembly motion.
"This is not the first time that the positions of president and deputy president have not been contested.
"So, we will move forward to approach and help the people," he said in a Facebook post today.
Earlier, Saifuddin used his discretion as a minister to exempt Umno from having its registration revoked.
In his statement, Saifuddin said the Home Ministry had exempted Umno from complying with Section 13(1)(c)(iv) of the Societies Act 1966.
This is related to the additional proposal passed at the party’s general assembly concerning the positions of Umno president and deputy president, which were uncontested in the party election.
Saifuddin said the conclusion was made after examining the decision made during the general assembly on March 3, 2023.
Section 13 relates to the deregistration of an organisation.
According to Section 70 of the Act, the home minister may use his discretion to exempt an organisation from any of its provisions.
Two days ago, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said his party would show a letter from the Registrar of Societies (RoS) approving the party's additional proposal that the top two party positions would not be contested this time around. - Mkini
