Floods: Over 37,000 people evacuated to relief centres in Johor

 


JOHOR BARU: The number of flood evacuees in Johor continue to increase with over 37,300 people now seeking shelter at temporary relief centres (PPS) state-wide.

The State Disaster Management Committee said as of 8am on Saturday (March 4), there were 37,322 evacuees currently placed at 238 PPS in nine flood hit districts.

“Segamat remains the worst-hit district with 13,358 evacuees seeking shelter at 77 flood relief centres. This is followed by Batu Pahat with 7,368 evacuees, Kluang (5,288), Muar (3,330), Kota Tinggi (3,282), Tangkak (2,661), Mersing (964), Johor Baru (699) and Pontian (362)," said the Committee.

It added that the number of evacuees in eight districts has been increasing.

"Only the Johor Baru district has seen a slight drop in the number of evacuees from 987 on Friday (March 3) night to 699 on Saturday morning," it said in a statement.

It added that the number of relief centres opened as of Saturday has risen to 238 compared to only 225 on Friday night.

The statement also noted that all districts in Johor have been experiencing rainy and gloomy weather throughout the day on Friday and on Saturday morning. - Star
