PETALING JAYA: The Titiwangsa Umno Youth’s election will have to be held again after a commotion occurred during the counting of the delegates’ ballot papers on Saturday.
Zaharah Adnan, who chairs the Titiwangsa election committee, said the ruckus was caused by the Youth committee’s refusal to accept ballots registered with the election committee, leading to an excess of ballots.
She claimed that some Youth committee members had tried to force the polls committee to only accept votes registered by the Youth committee.
“This led to a commotion during the vote counting process. There were threats between the Youth committee members and the election committee. It was a tense situation and we couldn’t reach a solution.
“To prevent any untoward incidents, I have suspended the Youth election, which will be held at a later date,” she told FMT.
Meanwhile, Umno election committee chairman Shahrir Samad said he has yet to receive any objections from Titiwangsa Umno over the commotion, though he had seen videos of the row.
If there are no objections by Tuesday, the parties involved in the commotion will be summoned to explain the issue, he said.
Video clips of the tense situation on Saturday had been circulating on social media, showing Zaharah and another Titiwangsa election committee member in a commotion with a group of Youth members. - FMT
