The government will be reconsidering the Touch ‘n Go (TnG) monopoly of highway toll collection as there has not been any convincing development or progress with the system, Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Addressing his audience at the “Meet Anwar” dialogue session today, the prime minister hinted that he’s not impressed with the company’s progress after it has been around for over two decades.
Anwar said this when responding to a question from a university student who asked if the government has plans to end the TnG monopoly since card payments are now allowed to pay for parking and at petrol stations.
“I think you are right, we have to reconsider that,” he said.
The dialogue session was part of the Youth Empowerment Forum 2023 held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre today.
Previously during the Ismail Sabri Yaakob administration, then works minister Fadillah Yusof said the government was considering allowing the public to pay highway tolls using alternative digital payments, not just TnG.
In 1997, the first TnG card was introduced and three years later, SmartTAG was sold to elevate customer convenience at tolls.
Meanwhile, in 2008, TnG cards became a mode of payment on trains and buses, expanding the cashless experience to new users. - Mkini
