PETALING JAYA: The redevelopment of the Jalan Raja Bot market in Chow Kit is expected to be completed in October 2025.
In a parliamentary reply, law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said the redevelopment of the market will cost RM125.8 million.
She was responding to a question from Johari Ghani (BN-Titiwangsa) whether the government had given approval to rebuild the market, which he said has been abandoned for 10 years, and when it will be completed.
Azalina said the redevelopment project had not been abandoned as phase 1 had been completed on April 25, 2016, and phase 2 was 90% complete.
She said the contract with the project’s main contractor had been terminated on Aug 18, 2021, but a new contractor was appointed through open tender on Sept 26, 2022.
“The project recommenced on Oct 17, 2022, and is expected to be completed on Oct 12, 2025.”
Azalina said the redevelopment will be completed in stages, with the remaining 10% of phase 2 set to be completed by May 19 this year.
“Phase 3 is expected to be completed on Dec 6, 2024, and phase 4 on Oct 12, 2025,” she said.
Johari had highlighted the slow progress of the market’s redevelopment as a key problem in the Titiwangsa constituency.
He had said the government must ensure that contractors appointed for the project were qualified and capable of completing the work on time. - FMT
