Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng has successfully raised RM2.25 million to pay for damages and costs after losing in a defamation suit.
Lim called on his supporters to not donate any further and assured there will be accountability.
"I cannot thank everyone enough for the kindness and help through these difficult times. I am humbled by your generosity.
"A licensed auditor will be appointed to ensure transparency and accountability on donations collected," he said in a statement today.
Last week, the Kuala Lumpur High Court ordered Lim to pay RM2.25 million in damages and costs to e-commerce firm Monspace (M) Sdn Bhd and its founder Jessy Lai.
They had filed a civil action against Lim in 2019 over an allegation that the company was involved in an investment scheme that failed to pay returns as promised to investors.
In that same year, the media also reported that a few of the company’s founders were charged in the criminal court over an alleged pyramid scheme.
Lim has to pay the damages within seven days from when the order was issued as no stay on the award was given pending appeal.
Failure to do so could have resulted in bankruptcy, which would lead to the DAP veteran losing his parliamentary seat.
The Kepong lawmaker had promised that if he succeeded in his future appeal and could reclaim the compensation, he would donate all of it to charity and education organisations. - Mkini
