Malacca exco set to win race for Umno Youth chief

Malacca state executive councillor Muhamad Akmal Saleh looks set to grab the position of Umno Youth leader.

Based on unofficial results obtained by Malaysiakini, Akmal leads his challengers with 63 votes.

Two other challengers trail far behind, with former deputy finance minister Shahar Abdullah bagging two votes, while Armand Azha Abu Hanifah got three votes.

This is an unofficial result based on vote tallies up to 5pm yesterday.

Akmal got votes from Bachok, Permatang Pauh, Bangi, Kota Melaka, Gerik, Sembrong, Bagan Serai, Kampar, Alor Setar, Lumut, and Parit Sulong.

Other divisions that voted for him were Shah Alam, Indera Mahkota, Masjid Tanah, Iskandar Puteri, Keningau, Ipoh Timur, and Petaling Jaya.

Akmal needs another 39 divisions to be confirmed as the new Umno Youth leader.

Malaysiakini understands that he is the candidate who received the support of outgoing Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki.

Four candidates vied for the position but Meor Hassan Mat Ali has not received any votes so far.

Today, representatives of the three wings of Umno in 189 divisions will elect their respective leaders, with four candidates vying for the positions of Umno Youth chief, Umno Puteri chief, and Wanita Umno head. - Mkini
