Man hurt in stray dog operation probed for obstructing govt officials

An elderly man who was allegedly injured by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) enforcement officers during an operation to capture stray dogs is now being investigated for obstructing government officials from carrying out their duties.

The incident, which occurred at Taman Kanagapuram in Petaling Jaya, was captured on video and had since gone viral.

In a statement, district police chief Fakhrudin Hamid said the man had closed the gates to his premises with the stray dogs inside when the officers were attempting to catch the canines following complaints.

"The operation team failed to catch the stray dogs because they were blocked by the man.

"After a scuffle ensued between the officers and the man, he was accidentally hit by a rod used to catch stray dogs," Fakhrudin stated.

According to Fakhrudin, the case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for causing injury and Section 186 for obstructing officers from carrying out their official duties.

Yesterday, Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung demanded an explanation from MBPJ for the conduct of its officers.

He called for a thorough investigation to be conducted by the council's integrity unit to ensure such an incident does not occur again.

Selangor exco in charge of local government, Ng Sze Han, also told Malaysiakini that he has instructed the mayor to investigate the matter. - Mkini
