JASIN: Melaka may witness the formation of a unity government, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Speaking at a Ramadan event here today, the Umno president said this was in line with the formation of the unity government at the federal level.
“In the state of Melaka, a Madani (unity) government has not been formed but it’s heading towards that direction,” he said at the event, which was attended by Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Ali and state Barisan Nasional chairman Ab Rauf Yusoh.
He said the change in the country’s political landscape would also be witnessed in the six states where state elections are due soon, namely Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Penang, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu.
In the Melaka state polls which took place in 2021, BN managed to obtain a two-thirds majority, winning 21 of the 28 seats in the state assembly. Pakatan Harapan holds five seats through DAP (4) and Amanah (1), while the opposition comprises Perikatan Nasional (2 seats held by Bersatu).
The state government is currently controlled by BN, while the unity federal government is a coalition formed by PH, BN, GPS and GRS. - FMT
