Ipoh-born Michelle Yeoh won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the 95th Academy Awards held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles today.
This is for her brilliant role as Chinese-American immigrant Evelyn Quan in the movie “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, who while being audited by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), discovered that she must connect with parallel universe versions of herself to prevent a powerful being from destroying the multiverse.
Yeoh, 61, created history by being the first Asian actress to win in this category.
This is another feather in Yeoh’s cap after recently creating history as being the first Asian woman to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, Best Female Actor in a Leading Role (as well as Best cast in a Motion Picture) and Best Lead Performance at the Independent Spirit Awards.
Her co-stars Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis won Best Actor in a Supporting Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role, respectively.
The movie also won Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Director.

‘I’m bringing this home to you’
In her speech, a visibly emotional Yeoh said: “For all the little boys and girls who look like me watching tonight, this is a beacon of hope and possibilities.
“This is proof that dreams do come true, and ladies, don’t let anybody tell you… ever… that you’re past your prime. Never give up.”
She also thanked Kwan and Scheinert, the cast and crew of the movie.
“But I have to dedicate this to my mum, all the mums in the world, because they are really the superheroes, and without them, none of us would be here tonight.
“She’s 84, and I’m taking this home to her. She’s watching (this) right now in Malaysia with my family and friends. I love you guys.
“I’m bringing this home to you. And also to my extended family, in Hong Kong, where I started my career. Thank you for letting me stand on your shoulders and giving me a leg up so that I could be here today.
“And to my godchildren, to my sisters, all of them, to my brothers, to my family. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to the Academy. This is history in the making! Thank you!” Yeoh added.
On related matter, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh took to Twitter to celebrate Yeoh while posting photos from The Pride of Malaysia Exclusive Viewing Party Oscar 2023.
