Minister instructs Jawi to assist cops on probing women's march

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Na'im Mokhtar has instructed the Federal Territories Islamic Department (Jawi) to assist with a police probe on the Women's March 2023 which took place on Sunday.

He said Jawi would not compromise on any action that is against Islamic teachings.

"The Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) wishes to remind all quarters to accept and respect Islam's position as enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

"Any efforts to promote or normalise deviant lifestyles which go against Islamic values and human nature is completely unacceptable," Na'im (above) added in a statement today.

He did not name the march but did name where it took place - in front of the Sogo shopping mall and at Dataran Merdeka - and said the demonstration happened recently.

Police are probing the march under the Peaceful Assembly Act.

The march aimed to bring people together to call for gender equality, justice, and an end to all forms of discrimination against women and girls.

However, the presence of rainbow flags and pro-LGBT signs has obfuscated all these issues and become a central focus among conservatives.

Some pro-Perikatan Nasional social media accounts have also used it as fodder to attack the government.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had previously stated the LGBTs will never be recognised by his government. - Mkini
