More than 100% increase in ceremonial dress allowance for civil servants

Civil servants entitled to the ceremonial dress allowance include those who take part in awards ceremonies or those on duty in Parliament or the state assemblies.

PETALING JAYA: The allowance for the ceremonial dress for civil servants has been raised from RM1,500 to RM3,500 with immediate effect, the Public Services Department (JPA) has announced.

In a circular last week, JPA director-general Zulkapli Mohamed said civil servants who are entitled for this privilege may claim the allowance once in three years.

In an explanatory note, the department said all officers in the professional and management category from Grade 41 and above, and support staff between Grades 29 and 40 tasked to work in Parliament and state assemblies, among others, are eligible for this mess kit allowance.

These officers are also entitled to claim RM1,000 as a black-tie clothing allowance, also known as semi-Western attire and a lounge suit, or batik (official dress) allowance of RM650 for officers and RM450 for their partners.

It said others who are entitled for the official dress allowance include those called to receive honorary titles from the King, sultans or governors given out annually or those invited to attend other official ceremonies.

“Officers are required to produce the invitation letters or cards and official directives asking them to attend Parliament or state assemblies,” the note added.

For the men, the day ceremonial dress is made up of white jacket, black pants, black songkok, georget, apolet and black shoes.

For night ceremonial functions, the official dress should be white shirt, white mess jacket, black pants, apolet and black shoes.

For women, the day wear comprises white jacket, black sarong, black hat, apolet, black handbag and black shoes.

For night wear, they should be dressed in white mess jacket, black long dress, apolet, girdle, handbag and black shoes.

It said the tudung is not classified as a component of a ceremonial dress. - FMT
