MP wants govt to solve overcrowding at Klang schools

Klang MP V Ganabatirau has lamented the overcrowding of schools at Bukit Raja and Kota Kemuning.

The DAP lawmaker said as residents of a state which contributes 25 percent of the country's gross domestic product, his constituents deserved better facilities.

"The schools in the areas are operating at twice the original capacity. This is not conducive.

"A large urban residential area like Bukit Raja, which has more than 20,000 residents, still does not have a secondary school.

“We have at least seven plots of land in the area to build a school, but what we got instead is a school built far away, bordering Meru," he told Malaysiakini.

Although there are a few primary schools in Bukit Raja, including a Tamil school, there is no secondary school there, save for a private institution.

Thus, secondary school students are forced to travel more than an hour to and fro to the nearest school in neighbouring Meru.

The second issue concerns the overcrowding of the Kota Kemuning secondary school, which has 3,600 students - way higher than its original 1,500 capacity.

This is because the sole secondary school in the area has to accommodate students from the neighbouring Bukit Kemuning, Bukit Rimau, Kampung Bukit Naga, and several other surrounding small housing estates.

According to Ganabatirau, plans to establish another secondary school in Kota Kemuning were initiated in 2017, which even had a ground-breaking ceremony.

"But everything disappeared after the Sheraton Move," he said.

Ganabatirau said he has met Deputy Education Minister Lim Hui Ying to discuss the issues, and she has promised to look into it.

"I hope the government will look into solving the problems as soon as possible," he added. - Mkini
