MP wants MBPJ's explanation on elderly man beaten by its officers

Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung has officially written to the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) asking about actions taken over an incident where its officers were seen hitting an elderly man while they were trying to capture some dogs, which has gone viral on social media.

“The Petaling Jaya Parliament office has on March 24 issued an official letter to the Integrity Unit of the MBPJ about their actions related to this case.

“The office has also asked for clarification from MBPJ on their standard operating procedure (SOP), if there are any, used by MBPJ while running their dog-catching operations. This includes the behaviour of the officers involved while carrying out the operation.

“The office hopes a thorough investigation will be carried out by MBPJ’s Integrity Unit and hopes this situation will not be repeated in the future,” Lee said in a statement today.

MBPJ has since told Malaysiakini that they are aware of the viral video and an internal investigations committee will be probing the matter.

“The MBPJ wants to stress that we will not compromise or protect any officers if this is true and it is proven that they have committed a wrongdoing,” the council’s statement to Malaysiakini read.

Selangor exco in charge of local government, Ng Sze Han, also told Malaysiakini that he has instructed the mayor to investigate the matter.

“I am still waiting for the report,” Ng said.

It was previously reported that several videos and pictures of an elderly man being beaten by purported MBPJ officers were spreading on social media, with netizens outraged by the incident.

In one of the videos, the officers can be seen hitting the old man with dog-catching iron rods as the man tried to prevent them from catching dogs.

The senior citizen has since lodged a police report over the incident, claiming that he was roughed up by the purported officers during a dog-catching operation.

The Star Online reported that Patrick Khoo, 69, filed a report at the Brickfields district police headquarters today, alleging two MBPJ officers tried to catch his pet dogs at his office in Taman Kanagapuram.

He tried to stop the officers, which resulted in the incident that was caught on video around 9pm on March 22.

Khoo claimed that the officer swiped the dog-catching rod against the left side of his face, resulting in injuries.

The man also said the officers eventually took away three adult dogs and a puppy.

MBPJ sends all dogs they catch to the Paws Animal Welfare Society in Ara Damansara, Petaling Jaya.

According to The Star’s report, a Paws representative said MBPJ sent in three dogs and a puppy on March 23 but no one has come to claim the dogs so far. - Mkini
