Payment by smart watch planned for Putrajaya MRT

Phase 2 of the Putrajaya MRT line, from Kentonmen station to Putrajaya Sentral, will start operating on Thursday.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Putrajaya MRT line may expand its cashless payment methods to include credit and debit cards and smart watches.

Mass Rapid Transit Corporation chief executive officer Zarif Hashim said that the line’s ticketing system is designed to accommodate such payment methods and could cater to those using ATM cards or smart watches in future.

At present, its only cashless payment system is Touch ‘n Go.

Zarif accompanied media practitioners on a round-trip ride from Putrajaya Sentral to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, a journey of about 1hr 15min with no stops in between.

He said the Hospital Kuala Lumpur station was designed to meet the needs of patients heading to or from HKL.

Apart from escalators and stairs that are not too high, the station also has a travelator similar to those found at airport terminals.

The 57.7km Putrajaya line serves a population of two million people. There are 36 stations along the line, including nine underground. It is expected to have an initial ridership of about 104,000 passengers daily once fully operational. - FMT
