Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said has set her sights on prioritising bankruptcy law reforms over others including political financing legislation.
This is as bankruptcy is an immediate problem affecting many whereas political financing laws were more needed during election season such as GE15, she said during a joint interview today.
The interview was conducted with several media organisations in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, where she was asked if political financing laws were among her priorities.
However, Azalina assured that political financing laws were under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's radar.
Recently, there had been renewed calls for clear laws regulating political financing following a slew of charges laid against Bersatu politicians for corruption.
Azalina said that although the matter was of importance, her immediate goal was to help qualified individuals be discharged from bankruptcy.
"I am looking at all sorts (of legislation)... Personally, I want to resolve problems faced by the rakyat (such as) matters concerning bankruptcy.
"Political financing laws should have been introduced before the last elections when working on the anti-hopping laws.
"We need political financing laws during election time," she added.
Putrajaya plans to table amendments to the Insolvency Act 1967 that will help 130,000 qualified individuals to be discharged from bankruptcy.
Azalina said other important upcoming bills include amending the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 and Mental Health Act 2001.
She added that the government also plans to abolish laws which criminalise attempted suicide. - Mkini
