Putra to be renamed GTA, to work with PN, says report

Dr Mahathir Mohamad (left), who joined Putra earlier this month, will take over the president’s post from Ibrahim Ali, says the source.

PETALING JAYA: Putra is set to be reshuffled and renamed Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), the loose coalition founded by Dr Mahathir Mohamad which is moving towards becoming an official political party, says a report.

Mahathir will then take over the president’s post from Ibrahim Ali, a long-time ally of the former prime minister, according to Utusan Malaysia.

Quoting a party source, the Malay language daily said this move will be explained to Putra members at its annual general assembly next month.

The source said GTA will partner with Berjasa and the National Indian Muslim Alliance Party (Iman) – parties that Putra was already allied with previously – as well as the Muhyiddin Yassin-led Perikatan Nasional.

“Recently, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang held a closed-door meeting with Mahathir after (PAS election director) Sanusi Nor had also met the former prime minister,” the source told Utusan Malaysia.

He also said cooperation between GTA and PN would be the first step towards ensuring the Malays regained power in the 16th general election.

However, the source said GTA may not take part in the upcoming state elections in six states, though it would lend PN its support.

He said PN was confident of winning the support of many Malay voters since Umno was now working with DAP in the government.

Currently, GTA is a loose coalition of Malay-based parties, NGOs, academics and professionals. Putra is a member of the coalition, founded by Mahathir last year.

Mahathir had quit Pejuang – the party he founded in 2020 – in February following its decision to leave GTA, saying it was akin to rejecting him.

He then joined Putra a month later and was given the “No 1” membership number, which was previously held by Ibrahim as the president.

The next day, Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir announced that the party had applied to join PN. - FMT
