PETALING JAYA: A total of RM3.46 billion has been allocated for carrying out a barrier-free system at highway toll plazas by 2025, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Abdul Rahman Mohamad, the deputy minister for public works, said the government was working to implement the multi-lane free-flow toll collection system, starting with a study in 2024 before full implementation in 2025.
The aim of the barrier-free system is to overcome congestion on highways, especially at toll plazas.
Rahman said the implementation of the system would have a positive impact as motorists would not need to stop or slow down to carry out toll transactions, Bernama reported.
About four million to five million vehicles a day pass through toll plazas on the toll highway network in the country, he said when winding up the debate on the ministry’s 2023 budget estimates.
He said the Kuala Lumpur-Karak highway would be upgraded from the Karak toll plaza to the Bentong toll plaza. The project, to begin in July, was likely to take four years to be completed at a cost of RM2.1 billion.
The Dewan Rakyat later passed an allocation of RM865.27 million for the ministry after 26 MPs took part in the debate. - FMT
