Terengganu exco lists busy schedule after court issues arrest warrant

Insisting that “the people must come first”, Terengganu exco member Mohd Nor Hamzah has listed his busy schedule since morning to explain his absence in court.

This came after the Election Court in Kuala Terengganu issued a warrant for his arrest this morning for failing to turn up in court to resume testimony in the hearing of an election petition to nullify PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s victory in the Marang parliamentary constituency.

Among others, Nor (above) listed an event offering free haircuts for schoolchildren returning to school and closing ceremonies for two events including one aimed and people with disabilities.

The list as posted on his Facebook account is as follows:

9am: Officiate hair-cutting event at Bukit Payong.

10.15am: Accompany the menteri besar at the Ihya Ramadan program at Wisma Darul Iman.

11.30am: Officiate the closing ceremony for a programme for people with disabilities in Maahad Syatibi.

12.30pm: Officiate closing ceremony for an intellectual roadshow by Sheikh Nuruddin Banjari al-Makii.

He claimed to have given cooperation to lawyers representing Jasmira Othman, who was the BN candidate for Marang during the 15th general election.

Nor said when he attended court proceedings on Tuesday, the court proposed that he return on Wednesday but he replied that he could not comply because he has to attend a state assembly sitting that day.

“On Wednesday evening, my personal assistant informed me that the BN lawyer has proposed that I attend (court) on Thursday 10am, but I proposed Thursday evening instead because I have many commitments on Thursday morning. The people must be prioritised,” he said.

He said he has promised to the lawyer that he would be present in court at 10am on Sunday.

Terengganu’s off days are on Friday and Saturday, thus the courts in the state operate from Sunday to Thursday (in the absence of any other public holidays).

It was previously reported that the election petition to nullify Hadi’s victory was filed on Jan 3 at the Kuala Terengganu High Court as per the Election Offences Act 1954.

Terengganu Umno chief Ahmad Said reportedly said among the points raised in the petition were allegations that PAS had bribed voters by distributing financial aid from the state government - via the i-Pension, i-Belia and i-Student initiatives - between Nov 15 and 17, 2022 in the run-up to GE15.

During the national polls, Hadi retained his seat with a 41,729-vote majority, defeating the three other candidates - Jasmira, Azhar Ab Shukur (Pakatan Harapan), and Zarawi Sulong (Pejuang). - Mkini
