Umno makes Asyraf new sec-gen, replaces Ahmad Maslan

Umno has appointed Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as its secretary-general, replacing deputy finance minister Ahmad Maslan.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Azalina Othman Said (above, right), meanwhile, has been made the party's information chief.

Umno supreme council member Mohd Sharkar Shamsuddin confirmed the matter to Malaysiakini this evening, and Asyraf, when contacted, confirmed the same.

Meanwhile, Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor was retained as party treasurer.

The official announcement of the appointments was made at the Umno headquarters this evening.

Asyraf (above, left), who was recently appointed Mara chairperson, has served as Umno Youth chief since 2018.

He was nominated by BN to contest in three general elections - Tumpat, Kelantan (2008), Pasir Puteh, Kelantan (2018), and Gerik, Perak (2022), but he failed to make the cut in all three polls.

The son of the Umno ulama council chairperson also decided not to defend his position as the party’s youth chief in the recent party elections, citing the failure to secure youth votes for BN in the 15th general election.

Azalina, a former Puteri Umno chief, has held the Pengerang parliamentary seat for five terms.

In the 15th general election last year, she defended the seat with a majority of 5,010 votes.

In the recently concluded party elections, she contested to become one of the three vice presidents of the party but fell short.

Meanwhile, at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today, Umno President Ahmad Zahid Hamidi also announced two other unsuccessful vice-president candidates, former vice-president Mahdzir Khalid and former Kepala Batas MP Reezal Merican Naina Merican, will be appointed to the supreme council.

He also announced that 13 Umno leaders have been appointed to the supreme council, including Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, Mohammad Fatmi Che Salleh, and Nur Jazlan Mohamed. - Mkini
