PARLIAMENT | The “egg telephone call” saga continues with Wee Ka Siong maintaining it was “Deepak Jaikishan” who rang him twice and called on the former carpet dealer to lodge a police report if someone had impersonated him.
At a press conference in Parliament today, the MCA president furnished evidence in the form of screenshots of the caller ID to substantiate his claim.
According to him, “Deepak” rang him on Monday using a phone number ending in “9989” with the initial “DJT” on his Whatsapp profile.
“That call to me by the individual calling himself ‘Deepak’ was made at 9.51am on March 13, which lasted 33 seconds before the call dropped due to a weak signal. A second call then rang on my phone at 9.52am which lasted seven minutes.
“By using the TrueCaller app, one can find an individual with the name ‘Deepak J Tekwani’,” he said.
Wee (above), who is also Ayer Hitam MP, added that the profile picture of the caller on Whatsapp also resembled Deepak Jaikishan.
However, the MCA president said the avatar was changed after he had revealed that the controversial businessperson had name-dropped the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and asked Wee to produce a statement over the egg importation controversy.
“He (Deepak) should make a police report to clear his name. I will cooperate with the police and provide them with any evidence available.
“I memorised every word spoken to me. Let the police investigate this matter with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and related telco to find the identity of this Deepak who used the mobile number ending in ‘9989’,” he added.
Yesterday, Malaysiakini contacted the number cited by Wee. The owner of the number, however, claimed that he is not Deepak and addressed himself as “Mr Raja”. He also claimed to be an aide to one of the shareholders in J&E Advanced Tech Sdn Bhd.
J&E is the sole company that Putrajaya allowed to import eggs from India during a local supply shortage.
Checks on J&E’s company information with the Companies Commission of Malaysia found that Deepak was not listed as a shareholder or director in the firm.
Speaking to Malaysiakini yesterday, Deepak denied contacting Wee and links to J&E.
The PMO had also issued a stern warning to those who misuse its name for their personal agenda, warning that action would be taken.
On Feb 22, Wee told the Dewan Rakyat that the government should resolve problems faced by local egg producers and not import eggs from India - which he said were more expensive and smaller.
Putrajaya turned to the importing of eggs from India as a temporary measure to address local shortages.
Bersatu leader Azmin Ali had alleged that Deepak was the sole person awarded the contract to import eggs from India.
In response to Azmin’s claims, Deepak told Malaysiakini that his team is in the process of filing a defamation suit against him. - Mkini
