Kelantan Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakob has again been announced as the returning chairperson of Felcra Berhad - after a previous attempt to do so was stalled.
Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi - who is also Umno president - made the announcement today while introducing the candidates for the party's internal polls.
"I appreciate Jazlan (above), who is very committed, and I wish to announce his reappointment as Felcra chairperson," he said.
The former Machang MP was first appointed as Felcra chairperson in October 2021.
However, his tenure ended when the current administration axed all political appointees at GLCs last December.
Zahid then quickly reappointed Jazlan to the post, but the move was put on hold by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, citing efforts by the government to cut down on overlap.
The deputy prime minister had also brushed off the postponement as being part of efforts to streamline GLCs.
This time, however, Zahid said Jazlan's reappointment had been vetted and approved by the prime minister.
He said more announcements on GLC appointments will be made in phases and does not discount that there would be some unhappiness about it.
"I believe there will be an issue over the appointments because not everyone likes us even though someone is the best (candidate for the job)," he said.
Zahid said that in Jazlan's case, the latter had overseen great performances by Felcra and its subsidiaries.
Last week, Zahid announced former Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as the new Mara chairperson.
Asyraf is also a Kelantan Umno leader.
Anwar has said that he is not opposed to politicians being appointed as heads of GLCs.
"I never said that any politician can't be involved in management (of GLCs).
"However, this is subject to terms, and they must have qualifications in the related field," said Anwar in December. - Mkini
