Zahid: Umno can solve Kelantan's water woes if it wins state polls

The water supply issues faced by Kelantan folk can be solved if Umno wins the upcoming state election, said its president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"The Kelantan water issue must be solved, and that is Umno's and BN's pledge (to the state). Kelantan voters should help Umno (to fulfil) the pledge this time.

"Give Umno five years, and if you don't like it, you can change it the next time.

“We just need five years to prove that we can supply clean water to the people in the state," Zahid told a press conference after the introduction ceremony for state Umno election candidates for the 2023-2026 term in Kota Bharu today.

Also present at the event was Kelantan Umno chief Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub.

Elaborating, Zahid said politicians should strive to provide clean water to the people, instead of blaming muddy water as an "act of God".

He further said that if given the chance, Umno would continue the good policies of the current state government.

Dirty water supply has been an ongoing problem in PAS-led Kelantan, to the extent of locals coining the term 'air karat' (rusty water) to lambast the state administration over the issue.

Among the reasons cited for the problem include the 40-year-old pipes used by the state's water authority Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) leading to non-revenue water and unsatisfactory quality water supply.

At the end of 2021, Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah said the state government would build a large reservoir to solve the problem.

Previously, former environment and water minister Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man also talked about a riverside water reservoir project (Taps) costing RM1.3 billion to solve the issue.

However, the water problem in Kelantan remains unresolved to date. - Mkini
