Former Baling MP Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim will know on Aug 21 whether he succeeds in the appeal of his defamation suit against former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng.
Counsel Felix Lim, who is representing Bagan MP Lim, confirmed the verdict date set by the Court of Appeal for the civil action linked to the allegation about the island state’s undersea tunnel project.
“The Court of Appeal has fixed the decision date on Aug 21,” he said when contacted by the media, adding it would be an open court proceeding.
Counsel Ho Wai Ping acted for appellant Azeez (above, left) during the case management.
On May 19, a three-person Court of Appeal bench chaired by Judge Azizah Nawawi, had heard oral submissions from legal teams for Azeez as well as respondent Lim.
Azeez’s appeal targets the Penang High Court's decision on Dec 11, 2020, which dismissed his lawsuit against Lim.
Through the civil action filed in March 2018, he claimed that Lim had issued defamatory statements that linked him to an RM3 million consultation fee payment from a developer of the undersea tunnel project.
Azeez alleged that the former finance minister made the statements during a press conference at the Penang Chief Minister’s Office on Feb 28, 2018, as well as during a Chinese New Year open house hosted by the Penang Development Corporation on the same day.
He seeks general and exemplary damages and other relief deemed fit by the court. - Mkini
