Avert your gaze, MP told after nurse uniform complaint

Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah has advice for his Kuantan counterpart Wan Razali Wan Nor, after the latter raised issue with supposedly “tight-fitting” uniforms of female nurses.

“If you can’t take it, don’t look.”

Puah also urged Razali to withdraw his statement and apologise to nurses in Malaysia.

He also pointed out that the country is already facing a shortage of nursing staff due to brain drain, which in turn has hampered the efficiency of the healthcare system.

“Yet, our nurses are now forced to put up with such narrow-minded remarks which would indirectly affect their morale. This would not do us any good in convincing them to stay back in Malaysia.

“Patients who are admitted to a hospital are only concerned about their health wellbeing, no one in their right mind going to the hospital seeking medical assistance would even pay attention to the nurses’ outfit.

“We should be appreciating the sacrifice and effort contributed by the nurses in saving lives and serving the nation instead of questioning what they wear,” Puah said in a statement yesterday.

Meanwhile, Bayan Baru MP Sim Tze Tzin chided Razali for his apparently misplaced priorities.

“Malaysia has just emerged from a deadly pandemic. (The) government is now focusing to reform the Health Ministry to improve healthcare services.

“But what is in PAS MPs’ minds? Nurses’ clothing. Come on, PAS/Perikatan Nasional. Is this the best you can do?”

Kuantan MP Wan Razali Wan Nor

During parliamentary debates on the Health White Paper yesterday, Razali urged for a more relaxed dress code for female nursing staff, saying many are wearing uniforms tight enough to see their figure, and are thus not syariah compliant.

He gave examples such as USM Kubang Kerian Hospital in Kelantan and Sultan Ahmad Shah Kuantan Medical Centre in Pahang that allow “more suitable” clothing.

Temerloh MP Salamiah Mohd Nor also voiced support for Razali’s view during the debate. - Mkini
