Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan has urged members not to be swayed by criticisms including by those who harbour resentment against the party.
Speaking to reporters at the Umno AGM's media centre, he said Umno upholds freedom of speech, so people - including former leaders or members - are free to criticise the party.
"Umno is an old party, so I hope members can make their judgements. Sometimes there are statements or remarks made that are a form of psywar.
"There are also others letting off steam, so I hope Umno members in particular will not be fazed by whatever have been said," said Mohamad.
He also reiterated his call for Umno to move forward within the party and as part of the unity government.
Delegates debating Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's policy speech had, among others, echoed calls for the party to strengthen its position ahead of the upcoming six-state elections.
"We can no longer afford to be divided, we can't afford to have camps, so we should stop sniping at each other.
"If there are ideas and views for the good of the party, or criticisms for the party, use existing internal channels for us to discuss and improve our weaknesses," said Mohamad.
Umno had come under fire from its sacked former leaders, including Annuar Musa and Noh Omar, who is now expected to run or campaign for Perikatan Nasional in the upcoming six-state elections.
Within Umno, party secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had recently noted a need for the party to reel in its leaders from attacking others in government. - Mkini
