Don't blame 'false report', Guan Eng tells Sanusi over Penang-Kedah row

Kedah Menteri Besar Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor should admit he was wrong in wanting the Federal Constitution to be amended to support his claim that “Penang belongs to Kedah”, instead of blaming news portals.

Former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng said if it is true that the news portal was inaccurate in its reporting on this matter, Sanusi should have denied or corrected the report immediately.

“The Free Malaysia Today report (where Sanusi demanded the Federal Constitution to be amended) was on May 31. Yesterday, he said this is a false report.

“If that is so, why did he wait seven days to make a correction? He only made the correction when he was investigated by the police.

“I believe Sanusi is saying this because he cannot answer the police’s questions in their investigation,” Lim (above) said at a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

The Bagan MP said Sanusi could have lodged a police report against the news portal if they refused to make the correction.

However, because Sanusi did not immediately contact FMT for a correction, Lim said it was clear that the menteri besar asked for the Federal Constitution to be amended so that Kedah can reclaim Penang.

“After seven days, Sanusi cannot deny it now. By not making any correction for seven days and now shifting the blame on the media, only after being questioned by the police, Sanusi is behaving in a most irresponsible and untrustworthy manner unfit for the office of the Kedah menteri besar,” he said.

Lim also advised Sanusi not to make personal attacks against him in order to “vent his anger”.

The police had yesterday recorded Sanusi’s statement, in connection with his statement that “Penang belonged to Kedah”.

The case is being investigated under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998.

Section 505(b) of the Penal Code criminalises making statements that may cause others to “commit an offence against the state or against the public tranquillity”.

Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, meanwhile, criminalises the misuse of network facilities.

Sanusi has been making the claim that Penang belongs to Kedah rather than being a separate state since February.

He claimed this was backed by academic studies and has demanded the Federal Constitution be amended to rectify the “distortion of history”. - Mkini
