Jokowi thanks 'brother' Anwar for commitment on labour issues

Indonesian President Joko Widodo has extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who he referred to as a dear brother, for Malaysia's commitment to improving the protection of Indonesian migrant workers in the country.

This included the setting up of a new bilateral mechanism to address issues such as the right to education for Indonesian migrant children.

"I highly appreciate Anwar's commitment to improve protection and ensure justice under the law for all Indonesian workers (in Malaysia)," said Jokowi at a joint press conference with Anwar in Putrajaya today in conjunction with his two-day official visit.

"Anwar and I have agreed to form a bilateral mechanism to resolve Indonesian migrants’ issues," he added.

Malaysiakini previously reported that Jokowi's visit came amid the Indonesian Embassy shelter in Kuala Lumpur consistently operating at full occupancy of 120 residents, no matter how many residents return home every month.

In addition to those seeking refuge at the embassy shelter, cases of abuse are also reported to the police directly.

Related matters

Jokowi’s delegation included his wife, Iriana Widodo, as well as a line-up of ministers who entered into other bilateral agreements with their Malaysian counterparts.

Aside from tackling labour violations, Jokowi said related matters raised include to set-up the formation of community learning centres for Indonesian migrant children in the peninsula, modelled after existing facilities in Sabah and Sarawak, supported by the Indonesian government.

Also, he expressed hope to expedite the deportation of Indonesian migrants detained in Malaysia's Immigration depots nationwide, aside from stricter compliance to recruitment measures through the One Channel System that mandates the introduction of social security measures in both countries.

Anwar, who had chosen Jakarta as his first official visit, reaffirmed Jokowi and Indonesia's position as a "dear friend" and that their discussions were held like one among family members.

"I don't want to see this as an ordinary working visit or ordinary bilateral ties, because I view Jokowi and our friends from Indonesia as dear friends and our discussions like family," he said.

As a result, among the major outcomes of the visit include the signing of the SOM Treaty and the Sulawesi Sea Treaty after almost two decades of negotiations on maritime boundary delimitation.

Both leaders also made commitments to resolve other outstanding land border issues, among others, on Pulau Sebatik, Sabah, which borders Nunukan in Indonesia's North Kalimantan province. - Mkini
